【ALTRUISTIC+Project】Donation of NT$800,000 to improve oral health care for school children

Due to Taiwan's geographical environment and urban-rural disparities, the country is facing challenges of insufficient medical resources and healthcare inequality in remote areas. In order to fulfill our commitment to giving back to society, our corporation has entrusted 'ALTRUISTIC+Social Enterprise' i to integrate donation budgets and benefit disadvantaged groups.

Through resource inventory and project design, 'ALTRUISTIC+Social Enterprise'  has donated NTD 800,000 to assist the Department of Dentistry at National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University in providing oral healthcare services for schoolchildren in remote areas. This is to improve their oral health, health education knowledge, medical care, and future social resource integration needs.

Unfortunately, the permanent tooth decay experience index for 12-year-old children in Taiwan does not meet the standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO). The caries rate for preschool children is as high as 79.3%, which is far higher than the WHO's goal of less than 10% by 2020. The permanent tooth decay index (DMFT) for children aged 12 and above is 2.5, also higher than the WHO's recommended standard of one. This indicates that there is still much room for improvement in the prevention and care of tooth decay in preschool children in Taiwan. Oral health has a significant impact on overall health, and schools serve as a primary field for health and health promotion. The professional team and resources can improve service efficiency for disadvantaged schoolchildren and families. Additionally, the DMFT index for permanent tooth decay among Taiwanese seniors aged 65 and above is 14.59, with only 59.3% having more than 20 teeth, and a high of 32.5% requiring dental prostheses. With the advent of an aging society, the demand for integrated oral healthcare services will significantly increase.

The National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University Oral Health Service Team possesses a selfless spirit of service. During their student years, they serve in remote areas during summer and winter vacations and after class, learn by doing, and maintain the sense of mission when standing on the front line. Teachers and volunteer doctors at the school also spare no effort and make incremental progress to raise awareness among Taiwanese people of the insufficient medical resources available to vulnerable groups and in remote areas. As a result, they have earned recognition from 'ALTRUISTIC+Social Enterprise'.

This donation project has a significant impact on medical inheritance, as it allows practicing dentists to participate and collaborate in guiding future generations.
