【ALTRUISTIC+ x Boyo x NYCU】A Charity Tour ❤ A comprehensive Oral Health Education
To enhance oral care for rural Taiwanese children and promote a health-friendly environment, the 'ALTRUISTIC+Social Enterprise' is organizing a charity event in collaboration with the "Bo-Yu Social Welfare Foundation" and the "School of Dentistry at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University." This event, titled "Oral Health Education Outreach for Rural Children: Holding Hands for Future Doctors," aims to create a platform for private enterprises and healthcare professionals to collaborate in raising awareness and self-care skills for oral health among rural children and parents. It also addresses the oral hygiene educational needs of underprivileged children in remote areas, emphasizing the importance of allocating medical resources to these regions.
This multi-location charity initiative covers various remote areas, including Jianshi Township, Zhudong Township, Wufeng Township, Changhua City, and Chaozhou Township. Many areas in Taiwan still lack dental clinics and access to dental care. According to 2011 statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, dental caries prevalence among preschool children in Taiwan is as high as 79.3%, exceeding the World Health Organization's target of below 10% by 2020. Additionally, the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index for children aged 12 and above should be 2.5, while Taiwan's rate surpasses the WHO's recommended standard of 1. Teaching children proper oral hygiene habits and providing them with accurate oral health knowledge is crucial.
During this initiative, the "BoYo Social Welfare Foundation" is conducting outreach for junior high and elementary school students in remote areas, emphasizing a preventive approach to dental health education. Many parents are also participating, enhancing their knowledge of oral care. As Taiwan's aging population increases, the need for preventive healthcare and dental care for elderly family members is an issue we must collectively address.
The "BoYo Social Welfare Foundation" has a long-standing presence in remote indigenous communities, offering free tutoring and professional social work services to support underprivileged children in Taiwan. Many of these children come from single-parent households or are raised by grandparents due to parental absence. Caregivers in these disadvantaged families often struggle to provide basic necessities, leaving limited capacity for immediate care. Due to a lack of life skills and nutritional knowledge, underprivileged children are more prone to consuming excessive sugary foods and neglecting the importance of oral hygiene. Sustainable investment in community resources, strengthening the social safety net, and providing continuous support and companionship are essential.
